The problem it solves
Tea leaves expand to several times their dry volume, and they need water circulating around them. A ball infuser packs them into a sphere where neither happens, which is why tea brewed in one tastes thin however long you leave it. A rolled oolong in a ball infuser is simply wasted.
Why a basket
Width. The leaf spreads out, water moves through it, and extraction is even. Then you lift the whole thing out in one motion — which matters because leaving the leaf in is the other great cause of bitter tea.
Details that matter
Fine mesh, so even broken leaf and small herbal cuts do not escape. A lid that doubles as a drip tray for the wet basket. Fits most mugs and small pots.
What to avoid
Novelty infusers shaped like animals or houses. They are charming and they are too small for the leaf to open, which is the entire job.
