Numi Rooibos: the caffeine-free evening default that does not turn bitter

Naturally caffeine-free, low in tannins, and it will not go astringent however long you forget about it. The most useful tisane to keep in the house.

PS Teas earns commission from qualifying Amazon purchases. It costs you nothing and never changes a score. Full disclosure.

What it is

Rooibos is a shrub from a single region of South Africa's Western Cape. It is not tea, contains no caffeine, and has a chemistry that means it simply does not develop bitterness with long steeping.

In the cup

Sweet vanilla-adjacent woodiness, a little honey, a deep red liquor. Comforting rather than complex.

Brewing

Boiling water, covered, seven to ten minutes. Then leave it another ten if you get distracted — it genuinely does not matter. That property makes it the best tisane for people who make tea and then wander off.

What we will and will not claim

Caffeine-free and low-tannin are established properties and they are why this is the standard evening and child-friendly recommendation. Broader health claims for rooibos rest on thin human evidence and we are not going to make them.

The verdict

Not exciting, extremely useful. The tin you reach for at nine in the evening for the rest of your life.

Best for the evening cup, and anyone cutting caffeine without giving up the ritual.

What works

  • Genuinely caffeine-free
  • Cannot be over-steeped
  • Safe evening and family option
  • Cheap

What doesn't

  • Limited complexity — it does not develop over steeps
  • Health claims in this category are widely overstated, including by sellers
